Rafael Nadal continues his bid to defend his U.S. Open crown Friday by sweeping former champion Andy Roddick in three sets in their quarterfinal bout.

The second-seeded former No. 1 Nadal dominated the match from the start against the big-serving Roddick, who was apparently exhausted, to book a semifinal spot with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Nadal, who has yet to drop a set heading into Saturday's semifinal against world No. 4 Andy Murray, unleashed 35 winners, 20 more than his 21st seeded foe, the last American man standing at Flushing Meadows.
The former No. 1 Roddick, who captured his lone major title at the 2003 edition of the U.S. Open, was coming off a grueling four-set triumph over No. 5 David Ferrer Thursday.
Nadal, who completed the career Grand Slam by winning the 2010 U.S. Open, will be appearing in his 17th career Grand Slam semifinal Saturday.
The reigning U.S. and French Open champ Nadal, who is seeking his 11th Grand Slam title, will face British star Murray for a 17th time at the ATP level.
The super Spaniard holds a 5-2 all-time edge against Murray in Grand Slam play, but Murray posted an upset over Nadal in the 2008 semifinals here in Flushing.
Murray, seeded fourth this year, advanced after outlasting the towering 28th- seeded American John Isner 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).
The three-time Grand Slam finalist Murray will be making his eighth career Grand Slam semifinal appearance, which includes all four majors this year. Murray was this year’s Australian Open runner-up to Novak Djokovic.
Saturday’s other semifinal pits high-flying current No. 1 Djokovic against third-seeded former top-ranked Swiss Roger Federer, who is seeking a record sixth U.S. Open title.
Djokovic is riding on an incredible 62-2 record this year, including Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the Aussie Open. One of the two setbacks by the Serbian superstar was courtesy of Federer in the semifinals at Roland Garros.
Meanwhile, American teenagers Melanie Oudin and Jack Sock captured the U.S. Open mixed doubles championship Friday.
Oudin, 19, and Sock, 18, who needed a wild card to enter the tournament, stunned the eighth-seeded Argentine duo of Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-8.
